Barrie Land Swap

At a General Committee meeting held at the City of Barrie on Monday May 7, 2018, Council gave a unanimous initial approval for a land swap of the W.A. Fisher Auditorium facility and lands with the Red Storey Field and lands. On Monday May 14 Council gave final approval to the deal. Despite being now approved, the swap is dependent on Councilís support of a business case for development and operation of the facility. The land swap would be completed between the City and HIP Development, a Waterloo developer. The City would assume ownership of the W.A. Fisher Auditorium, an opportune facility to locate new economic and community uses and services. At this time the City is envisioning a theatre and event centre, and has agreed to include the YMCA within the preliminary site plan, who expressed interest in the location. The City is in high demand of new opportunities for economic development, tourism, and recreation to serve its residents, particularly the west end. The cost to redevelop the site at this time is estimated at $25 million. If the project continues to move forward stakeholder consultations would be held on the project to determine a design that is prepared and presented back to General Committee for approval.
